Understanding HSN & SAC GST Codes

The Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) is an internationally standardized index of numbers developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO) to classify traded commodities. SAC (Services Accounting Code) is the specific system used to index service transactions. In India, citing the correct HSN/SAC code is mandatory on all B2B tax receipts.

Commodity Classification (HSN vs SAC)

While HSN indexes physical products (like electronics, garments, jewelry, and foods), SAC identifies service transactions (such as software development, consulting, legal aids, and hotel accommodation bookings).

Mandatory Digits & Invoice Rules

As per CBIC guidelines, businesses with annual aggregate turnover up to ₹5 Crores must mention at least a 4-digit code on B2B invoices. Businesses with turnovers exceeding ₹5 Crores are legally required to state 6-digit codes on all commercial bills.

HSN & SAC Code FAQ

Is it mandatory to specify HSN code on retail (B2C) invoices?

For businesses with aggregate turnover under ₹5 Crores, mentioning HSN on B2C bills is optional. For turnovers exceeding ₹5 Crores, a minimum of a 6-digit code is mandatory for both B2B and B2C supply receipts.

What happens if I cite an incorrect HSN code?

Entering wrong codes can result in calculating tax under wrong rates. Underpaying leads to penalty liabilities during audit rounds, while overpaying traps valuable operational capital in GST credit ledgers.
